Chapter Twelve

The Bad Omen

“C’mon, guys,” complained Emily, poking her head out of the car window. “Hurry!”

“Okay, calm down!” said Chubs, skittering to the driver’s seat.

“We’re going to be late!”

“No, we won’t. I know shortcuts, which will get us there right in time.”

“Er… I am sure you know,” said Emily, looking sideways at Chubs.

“Hey!”

It was the day of the second audience. Outside the Thirteen, while Chubs and Emily discussed the best way to get to the protest in time, Fiona looked a little anxious. She continually trembled while carrying the posters to the car, almost dropping them on the snowy floor.

“Fiona?” called Anushka. Fiona looked back at her. “Breathe, okay?”

“I’m anxious, and I’m getting fearful.” Fiona started noticing that everything in front of her was getting cloudy, exactly like it had happened on the first days of classes. Her face was now matching the white of the snow that covered the floor.

“It’s going to be fine. Keep breathing,” insisted Anushka, dropping a bunch of posters to the back of Chubs’s archaic car. “Think positive.”

“Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale,” whispered Fiona to herself, as if she were speaking to someone else. Upon entering the car, she questioned, “What if something goes wrong? I have an omen!”

“If anything goes wrong, we all go to jail and get kicked out of NU—no big deal,” said Chubs, turning his body over on the seat and rolling his head back to face Fiona, now more terrified than ever.

Emily didn’t react to what Chubs had said, but a cold shiver went down her spine with the thought of being banned from NU, from being denied to pursue her dream of becoming a professional activist. She wriggled deeper in her seat, trying to act indifferent. Today, Emily knew she couldn’t have a trace of negativity in her body. She had to be strong and let Fiona feel secure and relaxed.

“Chubs, don’t make it worse,” demanded Anushka, peeking her face through the hole between the trunk and the back seats. “It doesn’t help.”

“C’mon, come on… Enough of the chitchat,” said Emily trying her best to stop the discussion before it was too late.

Anushka moved fast, stocking all the posters in the car trunk.

“All aboard?” asked Chubs.

Yeah, yup, yes.

Chubs repeatedly tried to start the car ignition, while simultaneously, Emily sniffed a sour odor coming directly from her seat. She dodged her legs and ran her palms over the car seat fabric. She could feel an odd, rough texture.

“What is this?” asked Emily, looking down at her seat. Chubs acted like he didn’t hear her question, poorly disguising it. “Chubs?” insisted Emily.

“I dropped a box of nachos on the seat last week,” said Chubs against his will. Emily felt an uprising twisting in her stomach and removed her hand at once. “Do you want to get there today, or what?“

“Yes, let’s go!” she said, juggling her breathing. They finally took off.

Around the court, cars jammed the parking lot. After a few laps and Emily’s insistence, Chubs stopped his vehicle in a park further from the protest area.
